Spiders: Expert reveals how to deal with bugs in your home
While many spider species are totally fine staying outdoors in their finely woven webs, some prefer the warmth and darkness of cabinets, closets and dark corners, which is how they end up invading your home.
Spiders tend to wander into homes as the weather cools and when there’s less for them to eat outside.
Thankfully, the vast majority of spider species are not harmful to humans in any way even the ones that can bite humans.
Phil Greenstock, senior surveyor at Shield Pest Control has exclusively shared why there is an influx of these pests during this time of year and how to get rid of them.
He explained that male spiders will often look to enter homes during the autumn to find a female to mate with. Entering the home also offers warmth and protection from the elements.

Once the male has found a mate the female will look to lay her eggs and the whole process starts again. Phil said: “Spiders can and will survive the cold as they are quite adapted to our climates, however, they much prefer the warmth our homes offer them.”
However, these pests can prove to be useful as they assist with the control of flying insects such as mosquitoes, house flies and any other flying insect which may happen to enter homes.
The expert said: “When a flying insect enters a spider web it becomes food for the spiders and helps control populations of flying insects around our homes. Sometimes you need to let nature control nature.”
However, it is understandable that many would not want this type of pest scurrying around their home.

To tackle and manage an infestation in the home, Phil claimed that insecticidal sprays will only “knock down” the adult spiders which can physically be seen.
He said: “The insecticide will not affect the eggs which can be found in sacks often found within window reveals, under windowsills and other areas which are protected from the elements.”
Instead, “by far the best approach to eradicating spiders is by using a hard stiff broom or a handheld vacuum cleaner to physically remove the egg sacks and webs”. The expert said: “This will help to reduce the number of spiders being produced.”
As spiders can enter properties the same way any other insect enters our home, preventing them is not easy as “they can enter through many tiny gaps or holes” around homes.
Subfloor areas in properties with timber floors and large voids beneath are an “ideal place” for spiders.
The pest control pro suggested that proofing air bricks with a fine insect mesh will “help to prevent ingress”.
But remember, “never seal air bricks completely” as buildings need to breathe to prevent damp and moisture problems.
