A TikTok creator, who goes by the name Sparklenshinewithsammie on the social media platform, shared her tips to clean accumulated mould off a washing machine.

The simple, three-step process, which only requires vinegar and cotton wool, ensures even the most stubborn mould disappears.

First, you will need some distilled vinegar and cotton wool to wipe down the machine and remove the excess.

Next, soak the cotton wool in the vinegar and put it all around the rubber to let it permeate for two hours and then wipe again.

Set your washer to the hottest, longest setting on your washing machine and let it run empty.

The cooler weather is the prime time for mould infestations in washing machines and other household appliances.

With this in mind, experts from Beko, the UK’s number one best-selling home appliance brand, have shared how to thoroughly clean washing machines to prevent mould and prolong the lifespan of the appliance.

The experts said: “To keep your machine’s rubber seals free from mould and mildew, use a damp cloth and soapy water.

“Carefully wipe around the rubber seals, making sure you do not lift the seals away from the metal. If any dirt remains, use a toothbrush to scrub the surface.”

Some washing machines have self-cleaning functions which can help remove both bacteria and mould build-up.

To allow air to circulate into the washing machine drum, leave the door open. When the door is closed, bacteria can fester in the damp.

Homeowners also need to ensure the filter on the washing machine is cleaned on a regular basis. The experts continued: “We suggest once every three months, or whenever it becomes clogged.

“The filter, located on the bottom right-hand side of your machine, protects the drain pump from potential damage from foreign objects during the discharging of water, like coins or buttons.”
