Susannah Constantine shares tips for saving money doing laundry

1. Overloading the washing machine

Niki English, Sr. Director of Design & Business Development at AJG Fashion Consulting, said: “Many are guilty of stuffing the washing machine to the brim.

“Overloading leads to inefficient washing, requiring additional wash cycles, and consuming more energy. It prevents clothes from moving freely, resulting in uneven washing and unnecessary wear and tear.”

To effectively load the machine, make sure your hand can fit on top of the laundry load to ensure it has enough room to spin.

2. Ignoring fabric labels

According to the expert, clothing labels are there to be looked at and can save pieces of clothing which could otherwise be ruined.

Disregarding fabric care labels can lead to inappropriate wash settings, causing the garment to shrink or become damaged.

“Failing to sort clothes properly can lead to damage and the need for re-washing, both of which waste energy.”

Make sure to always turn clothing inside out while sorting too to help preserve colours and protect prints.

While this may mean doing more wash loads, it will save time and money in the long run, according to Niki.
