A MAJOR car repair hub with thousands of stores nationwide has closed one of its stores.<\/p>\n

Halfords on Cardiff's Penarth Road has closed down its shutters for the final time.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

"Customers will still be able to purchase from\u00a0Halfords.com," aspokesperson for the motoring and cycling store said.<\/p>\n

"We are working hard to support all of those affected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other active branches in the Welsh capital include locations in\u00a0Newport\u00a0Road, North Road and Cowbridge Road West, Wales Online reported.<\/p>\n

Halfords has\u00a0already closed two branches this year, with a spokesperson saying in February it "regularly reviewed" its portfolio.<\/p>\n

It comes after the\u00a0retailer\u00a0said its profitability had been knocked by "weakness" in the\u00a0consumer\u00a0tyre market.<\/p>\n

The go-to store for drivers blamed a shortage of technicians and weak demand for tyres for falling shares.<\/p>\n

In July 2020, Halford earmarked 60 stores and garages for closure following a hit in its\u00a0sales\u00a0due to\u00a0coronavirus.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0European\u00a0retail sector has been in crisis since the 2008 financial crash.<\/p>\n

One of the most famous retailers to fall victim to the crash\u00a0was high street stalwart Woolworths.<\/p>\n

A number of high street retailers have been bearing the brunt of an increase in online shopping in recent years as well, made worse during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

The online share of retailing was 6.6% in 2006, while in 2013 it was 12.7% and\u00a0rose to 19.2% in 2019, according to the Centre for Retail Research.<\/p>\n

High\u00a0inflation\u00a0since 2022 means shoppers have been less inclined to spend their hard-earned cash too.<\/p>\n

It has led to a number of high profile retailers including\u00a0Argos\u00a0and\u00a0Iceland\u00a0closing stores in recent months.<\/p>\n

Some have collapsed into administration too, including\u00a0Paperchase,\u00a0Wilko\u00a0and M&Co.<\/p>\n

M&Co has\u00a0since re-launched as an online website.<\/p>\n

Not all retailers have just been closing stores though – some are opening branches, or already have, in 2023.<\/p>\n
