As the days grow colder, mice begin to make their way indoors looking for shelter from the winter weather. However, for many people, these rodents are unwelcome pests in the home. Mice traps are one of the most traditional and well-known ways of putting a stop to unwanted house guests, but they are often considered to be inhumane.

Ceith Griffith, an entrepreneur who shares his household “tricks and tips” with an audience of 1.4M followers on TikTok, pointed out there are other ways to deter mice without killing them.

He shared a cheap tip in a TikTok video which can cost as little as £1.20. The video creator said that the hack had been passed to him by his grandparents.

Ceith explained: “If you want to get rid of mice out of your house you only need one thing. Just go to [a supermarket] and get some dryer sheets, put the dryer sheets underneath your cabinets, behind your washer, behind your dryer and behind your refrigerator and couches.”

ASDA’s own-brand dryer sheets in the scent moonflower and ylang retail at £1.20 for 40.

“I promise you that those dryer sheets will keep those mice away,” said Ceith.

“I used to do this all of the time whenever I had mice real bad before I got a cat so therefore you should use dryer sheets and you will never have to worry about mice again.”

There are contrasting schools of thought as to whether dryer sheets actually work or not. The heavy scent of dryer sheets attacks the mice’s strong sense of smell. Although the smell may be pleasant to humans, it can send mice scampering in the opposite direction.

Experts from Pest Kill said: “Dryer sheets won’t kill mice unless they happen to eat an entire sheet of it, which they won’t because it doesn’t taste good. All you can use the sheets for is to repel them.

“Repelling is different from killing in that it’s used to keep mice away from places you want them to stay out of. It will also help drive mice out of your home that are already there.”

They suggest placing the sheets in rooms where other scents may attract mice, for example, popping a few close to kitchen cupboards where mice may usually travel in hopes of food.

Viewers of Ceith’s video shared their experience using dryer sheets. While some had success, others were not convinced by the hack.

A user posting under the name mommagirl2ks said: “Bounce dryer sheets work the best! It really works.”

Another user named Jill added: “This 100 percent works.”

However, other users pointed out a crucial flaw in the hack. Cain Kathy said: “Nope! Doesn’t work. They use them for nesting.”

A second user added: “Dude, they use the dryer sheets for bedding up here in Wisconsin.”

Alternatively, if you want to get rid of mice by attacking their sense of smell, some experts suggest using peppermint oil, although this will only work for a short time.

The strong scent of the peppermint may attack the rodent’s sense of smell, but as with most gases and fumes, the peppermint oils scent will eventually dissipate and no longer affect the ground areas inhabited by mice.
