WhatsApp warning: New hack lets friends KEEP your 'deleted messages' forever

WhatsApp is working on a new way that allows people to keep disappearing chats.

Disappearing messages expire after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days depending on how long you choose.

The feature is designed to make things a bit more private – and stop people digging back on things you said in the past.

They can be set by anyone for individual chats or groups.

WhatsApp has been exploring new ways to expand disappearing messages and now it looks like a way to preserve them longer is on the cards.

This applies to groups, anyway – so you might have to be more careful about what you say in future.

According to a leaked screenshot obtained by WABetaInfo, the new option will allow people to keep important messages so they never disappear.

An option in the group settings shows a button labelled "Kept Messages".

"In other words, you can prevent some disappearing messages to disappear in a future version of WhatsApp," the site said.

"Since everyone in the chat can decide to un-keep those messages, WhatsApp is now planning to make it easier to find them, so they are developing this section."

That means WhatsApp could decide not to go ahead and make it available to all in a public release, so we'll have to wait and see for now.
