The Warm Home Discount Scheme applies to eligible households between October and March. Certain households must remember to call the helpline indicated to them before the February 28, 2022 deadline.
The Warm Home Discount Scheme allows eligible households to receive up to £140 off their winter electricity bill.
Unlike other benefits, this discount is not paid directly to eligible claimants but will instead be seen on one’s electricity or gas bill.
Additionally, claimants could receive the discount on both electricity and gas depending on their supplier and what they provide.
Anyone with pre-paid or pay-as-you-go electricity meters can still qualify for this discount and if successful will receive for example a voucher to be used when topping up their meter.
The assistance to help with winter housing costs will not affect similar benefits such as Cold Weather Payments or Winter Fuel Payments.
To be eligible for the payment, households must qualify under one of the following:
- Receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
- Receiving a low income and meet one’s energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme.
Those that qualify under the first condition are known as the ‘core group’ whilst those who qualify under the second condition are known as the ‘broader group’.
Applying for the discount will differ depending which group one fits into.
Eligible applicants from the core group qualified for the discount on July 4, 2021 if the following all applied:
- Their energy supplier was part of the scheme
- Their name or their partner’s is on the bill
- Them or their partner receives the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
Anyone in the core group should have received a letter between October and December 2021.
This letter would have detailed how one can claim the discount and specified for certain households whether they needed to confirm their details through a helpline.
Britons have been reminded that the deadline to call the helpline and receive the discount is February 28, 2022.
Electricity and gas suppliers will officially apply the discount to bills by March 31, 2022.
Anyone who did not receive a letter but believes they are eligible for the core group is advised to call the Warm Home Discount helpline on 0800 731 0214.
Those that qualify under the broader group will need to apply directly to their electricity supplier so long as:
- Their energy supplier is part of the scheme
- They are on a low income
- They receive certain means-tested benefits
Electricity suppliers are able to decide who will and won’t receive the discount in this group as the number of discounts they can provide is limited.
