‘Successful’ methods to ‘deter’ fruit flies from your kitchen

TikToker washing hack on how to remove fruit flies

Once fruit flies are in the home, it can be hard to get rid of them, especially if you have fruit and food lying around on the kitchen counter.

Rachael Kiss from Alliance Online said: “Summer is just around the corner which means longer, brighter days for Britons itching for some glorious sunshine.

“However, when warmer weather arrives, insects are more likely to appear in the house and cause a nuisance, and pesky fruit flies prove to be the biggest culprit.

“Thankfully, there are a number of preventative measures you can take to reduce the chance of infestation.”

1. Natural traps

According to the expert, the “most successful” way to get rid of flies is to use a natural trap with apple cider vinegar.

Start by filling a small bowl or jar with apple cider vinegar along with a few drops of washing up liquid, covering it with a plastic wrap.

Make sure to poke small holes on the surface to entice the flies into the liquid, and according to the expert, this will also work with red wine.

Rachael added: “Natural repellents are strong deterrents for fruit flies. The strong scent of dried basil, mint and bay leaves can be simply left where you tend to find fruit flies which should repel them from the area.

“Alternatively, mix water with essential oils like lemongrass, lavender, or eucalyptus which can be sprayed as a natural repellent.”

2. Keep the kitchen clean

Keeping the kitchen and surfaces clean and disinfected can help to to prevent and deter fruit flies as well as other insects too.

This is because the counters will be free from food remnants which they would otherwise be attracted to.

Taking out the rubbish bin more often, so food waste doesn’t end up rotting, can also help to prevent the pests from infesting the home.

3. Store fruits and vegetables properly

The expert continued: “Fruit flies are attracted to the ripeness of fruit and vegetables and the smell of fermentation, so seal and refrigerate food and keep it in an airtight container.

“There are numerous airtight containers currently on the market and, thankfully, they aren’t too expensive, so it’s worth investing if you’re sick of fruit flies.”

4. Use a fan to deter flies

Positioning a fan by the kitchen window or door can help to “deter” flies away from the home because they are “weak fliers”.

Rachael noted: “In addition to the benefit of a fan cooling down your home during hot weather, the constant movement of the air created by the fan can disorient fruit flies and makes it a challenge for them to navigate and find food sources.”
