Other things that can increase energy bills include hot water and keeping lights on when it is dark outside. However GoCompare has shared their simple tips in reducing your energy bill this winter.
Choose a new supplier
By comparing different suppliers with the plan you are currently on, you may find that there are cheaper tariffs out there that could save a lot of money.
GoCompare said: “If you decide to switch online, your new supplier might offer you an exclusive rate or pay your old supplier’s early exit fee, if you have one.”
Switch the lights off
When it is dark and gloomy outside, it’s easy to forget that keeping lights on around the house can amass a huge energy bill.
When a room isn’t in use, it is important to turn the lights off which could help save a fortune each year.
Unplug or switch off appliances
GoCompare said: “It might not be practical to turn off your appliances at the wall, but your laptop, phone and other appliances will still use power if you leave them on standby.
“Switching them off would save you money as you’ll be using less energy, potentially saving you up to £30 per year.”
Read your energy bills
By keeping up to date with your own energy bills and payments, it can help make sure that you are not getting overcharged for your energy use.

You may also wish to provide your supplier with regular readings to ensure you are not in debt.
GoCompare said: “If you’re in credit, you’re entitled to ask for a refund.”
Use LED bulbs
Changing existing bulbs to halogen bulbs or LEDs use less energy to run and so are a lot cheaper to use in the long run.
Although the initial cost may be more pricey, they also last longer than normal bulbs.
According to GoCompare, you could save up to £35 a year by doing this.
Turn down the heating
When it is cold outside, it’s normal to turn the thermostat up to get the heat circulating around the home fast.
However GoCompare explained: “Lowering the temperature on the thermostat by one degree could mean you spend up to £75 less on your energy per year.
“If you can schedule your heating, make sure it only comes on when you’re home – if it’s not that chilly, turn it off to save energy.”
Wash your clothes on a lower temperature
Washing your clothes at a temperature between 30 and 40 degrees can help you save money on the energy bill and switching to cold can save even more.
Some clothing may need to be washed with hot water and so waiting until there is a full load of clothes to wash can help reduce the amount of times a washing machine is used.
Stop running the tap
Running the tap when cleaning dishes wastes a lot of energy and money.
Instead, GoCompare explains: “Fill up a bowl or the sink to waste less water and use less energy…you could save up to £25 per year doing.”
Adjust the temperature of your water
GoCompare said: “Instead of going backwards and forwards with the hot and cold taps, newer boilers allow you to change the temperature of your hot water.
“For example, turn the thermostat down to fill your bath without needing to use the cold tap. When you’re finished, just turn the temperature back up again if you need to.”
Get an energy-efficient showered
GoCompare explained: “Water-efficient showerheads could help you to save up to £75 per year. Have a look at the cost of energy and how much water you’re currently using versus the cost of replacing it, to see if it’s worthwhile for your household.”
