PIP payments are benefits from the Government intended solely for people who are disabled or severely ill. The money can go towards everyday life costs and is also available for people suffering from a mental health condition. PIP is available on top of Employment and Support Allowance and other benefits, and your income, savings and employment status don’t affect your eligibility for the benefit.
How many PIP points do you need to get a Blue Badge?
You can get a blue disability parking badge if you’re on PIP in some cases.
Claimants need to have scored more than eight points in the “moving around” area of their PIP assessment.
You also need to have scored 10 points in the “planning and following journeys” segment of the assessment.
If you were put in category E, which means your stress, anxiety or other mental health issues stop you from leaving the house, you’re also eligible for the blue badge.
If you’re unsure, you should reference your PIP decision letter to find out more about your claim.
You can still get a badge if you:
- Have long term problems walking or going to places – including issues arising from stress, anxiety or other mental health issues
- Have severe problems using both of your arms
- Are applying on behalf of a child aged two or over who has problems walking or going to places, or a child under three who need to be close to a vehicle due to a health condition
How do I apply for a Blue Badge?
If you don’t fit the requirements above, that means you’re not automatically eligible for the badge.
In this case, you will need to fill in an extra part of the application form to explain why you need a badge.
It should be noted, however, that an application when you’re not automatically eligible is more complicated, and you can contact your nearest Citizens’ Advice Bureau for help.
People with a terminal illness will have their application fast-tracked by the council in most cases.

Before you apply, make sure you have:
- Your National Insurance number or child reference number if you’re applying for a child
- The number, expiry date and local council on your current blue badge if you have one
- Your original decision letter form the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP)
You will also need:
- Details of your medical condition if you’re not automatically eligible
- Proof of identification, for example, a birth or marriage certificate, passport or driving license
- A Council Tax bill from the last three months as proof of address, or you can give your local council permission to check their records
- A photograph of the person the badge is for taken with a digital camera
