Lots of people will be looking for simple ways to save on their food bill as inflation – driven largely by food and energy prices – remains at a 40-year-high. Sue Clay, 59, from St Neots in Cambridgeshire said she manages to save so much money by batch cooking, using her slow cooker and having a ‘use up day’.
Tesco is encouraging the nation to dedicate one day a week to cooking a meal using food they already have in the kitchen.
Taking stock of what’s already in the cupboard before making a shopping list could save cash-strapped families around £20 a month, or £260 a year, Tesco claims.
Tesco shopper Sue Clay, 59 from St Neots in Cambridgeshire, told Express.co.uk she does an inventory of what’s in the fridge and cupboards including any leftovers before going to the shops.
She says having a shopping list is crucial and to make sure she’s not wasting any food, she creates a rolling four-week meal plan.
Sue told Express.co.uk: “I do an inventory of my kitchen every week. In our home, it’s known as the ‘Marauders Map’ for the chest freezer that lives in the garage.
“When I’ve done any bulk cooking, I box it up in plastic takeaway-type tubs. I then put the boxes in a carrier bag and staple a label to the bag so I know what’s in it.
“Then I make a note on the Marauders Map to tell me where I’ll find the bag next time I go freezer diving.
“This way I can almost use the map as a menu – choose what I want to serve on a given day, and then go straight to it. I go to the shops with my Marauders Map and a shopping list every time and it really helps me to stick to a budget.”

As many as nine in 10 shoppers don’t always know what’s in their kitchen before they head to the shops, a new survey commissioned by Tesco has found.
It revealed almost three quarters (73 percent) of UK households have thrown away forgotten items lurking in cupboards, fridges and freezers.
The amount of edible food an average UK household wastes each year equates to approximately £800.
But having a ‘use up day” could help British families save a third of this, Tesco claims.
Tony McElroy, Tesco Head of Campaigns, said: “At Tesco, we want our customers to be able to get more out of their food shop whilst keeping delicious meals on the table.
“That’s why we’re encouraging shoppers to implement a weekly Use Up Day, take stock of what they have in their kitchens and make a shopping list before going out to shop.
“A little planning can help to spend less and reduce food waste, helping both our pockets and the planet.”
Tesco has compiled five recipes to help everyone make the most of leftovers, costing less than £1.50 per serving.
