The kitchen has been labelled the “heart of the home”, with families and homeowners often spending the most time in this room out of any other. Kitchens are not only practical spaces but are used to socialise, host gatherings and relax. When renovating a kitchen, it can be tempting to add as much storage as possible.
However, DIY SOS star Mark Millar has assured homeowners that sometimes, “less is more”.
Mark, who is a building expert, is currently appearing on the second season of his show, Dream Kitchens and Bathrooms with Mark Millar on Channel 5.
Mark spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about some of the “biggest mistakes” homeowners make when renovating a kitchen.
He explained: “I think some of the biggest mistakes people make is putting too much stuff in.

“They get carried away when it comes to planning.
“If they’ve gone to a kitchen showroom or a planner, they will want you to get as many cupboards and units into the kitchen as possible to make as much money as possible.
“But a lot of the time I see kitchens being over-cluttered with cupboards and drawers.”
Mark said homeowners need to think about how they want their kitchens to work in terms of storage.

“Wall units bring the room down and make it quite heavy.
“You’re better off with open shelving.

“It sucks all the light out.”
