Mattress toppers are an inexpensive way to improve comfort when you sleep. These specially designed toppers can help to cushion your mattress and also protect its longevity. They are made from a range of materials, many of which absorb moisture and cleaning products which means you must clean them with considerable care. But how exactly should you clean a memory foam mattress topper?
People spend an average of a third of their lives in bed.
Keeping your bedding clean is therefore very important for hygiene and health.
Given the delicate structure of mattress toppers, it can be difficult to clean them.
Some may be machine-washable, but may not be safely washed in this way.
The type of material your mattress topper is made from impacts how you should clean it.
With a memory foam mattress topper, you should begin by vacuuming the topper and then removing it from your bed and placing it on the floor.
Ideally, you should place it on a hard and flat surface to help you reach every crook and cranny of the item.
Vacuum the mattress topper with a soft brush attachment as a harder brush can damage the fabric cover of the topper.
Use circular motions when vacuuming to ensure you remove as much dust and dirt as possible.
Once you have finished hoovering your topper, you should take a moment to spot any stains on the item.
These may be a result of sweat, body oils or even accidental spills.
Spot cleaning is the next step and to undertake this you should fetch a light-coloured cloth before you begin cleaning the topper.

There are several different cleaning solutions which can be used in this scenario.
Mild laundry detergent mixed with water in equal parts works well.
Simply create the solution and then rub it over the stain in a circular motion before allowing it to sit for 30 minutes.
After this time has elapsed take a clean damp cloth and then wipe it off, making sure to remove all residue from the topper.
Finally get a clean, dry towel and blot the area to remove excess moisture before allowing it to dry fully.
Baking soda and cold water mixed in a 1:2 ratio is also an effective solution using the same method as above.
Instead of washing the baking soda solution off after 30 minutes, you can also leave it for eight hours or overnight and then vacuum the surface clean the next day.
Distilled white vinegar is another effective solution to clean your mattress topper.
You should take a soft piece of cloth and dip it in the solution.
Rub the stain in circular motions, moving inwards to minimise the risk of extending the stain.
Keep repeating this process until the stain completely disappears.
Pat the area dry with clean towels or paper towels and then allow the topper to air dry completely.
