Slipping into bed after a long, hard day at work isn’t the same if your sheets and pillowcases are dirty. Don’t be lazy – not washing your sheets can worsen allergies and skin conditions, and makes the perfect environment for dust mites. chatted to Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy to find out how often you need to wash your pillowcases.

Most of us (around 90 percent) change our bedding once every other week, but that’s not enough.

The general consensus is that we should all be washing our bedsheets once a week, or at least owning several sets of sheets so we can change them once a week.

The same applies to pillowcases, but if you suffer from a skin condition you’ll need to change your pillowcase every single day.

This may sound excessive and might not be necessary for everyone, but using a fresh pillowcase every night is essential if you suffer from acne, allergies or want to freshen up your complexion.

Dr Lee explained: “You rest your face on your pillowcase every night, and even if you have washed and cleansed your face, you are then rubbing your clean skin on potentially contaminated fabric.

“Dead skin cells, sebum, dirt and sweat all combine on your pillowcase to create a hostile environment for skin.

“Washing powder and fabric conditioner also contain chemicals such as phthalates, methylene chloride, 1- dioxide and acetaldehyde.

“Phthalates, for example, have also been linked to other conditions such as asthma, allergies, cancer and diabetes.”

If you want the best complexion and general health, give your skin a break, and use a clean, safe and hygienic pillowcase.

Dr Lee said: “Wash your pillowcase every day if you can, in hot, soapy water.

“Use non-biological washing powder and ditch the fabric conditioner or use a hypoallergenic option.”

Your choice of pillowcase is important too, as cotton is generally better than synthetics.

Dr Lee said: “Cotton can be washed at high temperatures and is a soft, breathable fabric.

“More recently, silk pillowcases have been advocated for best results for hair and skin.

“Silk is ultra-smooth, reducing friction from tossing and turning on skin and hair, and it may also help keep your skin better hydrated overnight.”

You could also consider a Silvon or essential oil pillowcase.

Dr Lee said: “Silvon pillowcases have silver woven into the fabric, and silver effectively kills many different types of bacteria.

“The Nufabrx Pillowcase is made of bamboo, and contains lemon balm, lavender and essential oils – it has been shown to reduce bacteria on the skin surface by 90 percent.”

It may sound like a lot of hassle having to wash your pillowcases on a daily basis, but owning a few different sets will solve the problem.

Dr Lee added: “Remember – a pillowcase has two sides and can be turned inside out.

“You can lie your face on a clean surface every four days without washing the pillowcase if you prefer to do this.

“You should also try to sleep on your back as this avoids rubbing your cheeks on the pillow.
