Cleaning hack: TikTok user shares method for carpet cleaning
Carpet cleaning isn’t the easiest job, but can make the biggest difference to the look of a room, taking it from shabby to sparkling. While some may choose to call in the professionals, there are carpet cleaners on the market that could be worth investing in if you have lots of carpeted areas to tackle.
Sometimes it isn’t even dirt that needs removing – carpets can smell frowsy and a quick refresh is all that might be needed.
Speaking about the germs lurking in carpets, Dr Lisa Ackerley, Chartered Health Practitioner and founder of The Hygiene Doctor explained: “How often do you walk into someone’s house and smell an unpleasant odour? While vacuuming is done habitually to keep on top of surface dirt visible to the eye, regular carpet cleaning is often lower down the cleaning agenda, but it shouldn’t be because deeper down in the carpet pile, bacteria, other micro-organisms invisible to the naked eye can lay undetected, causing not only unpleasant odours but potentially illness if transferred to your mouth.
“Carpet odours are caused by bacteria that are trapped in the carpet fibres; the more volatile the bacteria, the greater number of smelly particles are released to diffuse through the air.
“Homeowners are often ‘nose-blind’ to the familiar smell of their surroundings, but a visitor will pick up an unpleasant odour straight away.

“It’s not only hygienic to regularly give your carpets a deep down clean, but the fresh smell of a clean house is welcoming for visitors and can also contribute to our sense of wellbeing.
“When moving to a new house, a deep clean for me is essential, and carpet cleaning comes high on the list to cleanse carpets (if you aren’t replacing them).
“As well as removing odour causing bacteria and any unwanted stains, a carpet clean will get rid of other allergens such as dust mites.
“A deep down clean is particularly important in the winter, as whilst we keep the cold out by closing windows, we keep dust mites in, giving them a moist, warm environment so that they can flourish.Dust mites leave allergenic poo behind, which causes illness in some people, for example a constant blocked and runny nose to exacerbated asthma symptoms.”
Express.co.uk tested the new Vax Platinum SmartWash Carpet Cleaner, which Vax says is their best ever carpet washer, killing over 99 percent of bacteria.
The size of a standard upright vacuum cleaner, the machine is very easy to put together out of the box, with everything clicking into place.
Fill the front part with warm water and pour solution into the compartment in the back, switch it on and away you go.
There is also a concentrated spray included for use on stains and marks.
The solution has a pleasant floral scent which won’t drive you from the house to get away from it (unlike the hotdog-like smells that come from professional cleaning machines).
Light and simple to use, the machine wets the carpet as you push it forward and dries the area when you pull it back, making it easy to know which areas you have covered.
Flexforce brushbars clean deeply, lifting dirt and stains from the carpet.
Drying time was relatively quick at around three hours, and the previously dingy carpets where left bright and refreshed.
A couple of marks caused from having builders tramp through the house were dealt with effortlessly, no scrubbing required.
At £299.99, this is an investment for those with a large home and carpets in high traffic areas they want to keep looking their best.
