Baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, is an alkaline substance that is extremely useful around the house. However, did you know that the ingredient can also be ingested or used on the skin for health benefits? Express.co.uk reveals the five ways adding baking soda to your routine could improve your health.

Baking soda health benefits

Indigestion, heartburn and acid reflux

Adding a quarter of a teaspoon of baking soda to some water is a great way to help indigestion, heartburn and acid reflux.

Baking soda has an alkaline pH so it can neutralise the acidity in your stomach just like a range of over-the-counter antacids.

This works for the immediate relief of both issues, but not if you have GERD or these symptoms on a regular basis.

If your symptoms don’t improve after a couple of weeks, see your doctor to get to the root of the problem.

Bad breath

Swishing half a teaspoon of baking soda in half a glass of warm water around your mouth is a miracle-worker for bad breath.

You can even buy toothpaste that contains baking soda (don’t make your own because baking soda is abrasive).
Baking soda can ward off bacteria that causes bad breath, gum disease, and so on.

While one study found that baking soda mouthwash didn’t significantly lower oral bacteria levels, it did show that baking soda increases the pH levels of saliva, which is important for inhibiting bacterial growth.

White teeth

Baking soda not only takes care of your dental health, but it can also whiten your teeth.

Stop wasting money on expensive treatments and teeth whitening products and buy toothpaste that contains baking soda.

Baking soda has mild abrasive properties that can break the bonds of molecules that stain your teeth, so yellow or stained teeth will be greatly improved after using it.

Baking soda also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which may help fight harmful bacteria and improve dental health.

Smelly pits

Did you know that human sweat is odourless? It only starts to smell when the bacteria in your armpits breaks it down into acidic waste products.

As baking soda is alkaline, applying baking soda mixed with coconut oil to your armpits will make it less acidic and get rid of bad smells.

There’s little evidence that this works, but some people swear by natural deodorant like this, so it’s worth a shot!

Canker sores

If you suffer from canker sores (small ulcers that pop up inside your mouth), baking soda might help.

Baking soda mouthwash or spot treatment could help canker sores to heal.

Canker sores aren’t contagious, so it isn’t a risk to dab the alkaline powder onto the spot to ease irritation and pain.

Just make sure you’ve made the baking soda into a paste with water first.
