ARGOS customers are fuming after finally managing to buy new PlayStation5 consoles, only to be told moments later that the console is out of stock and refunds will take a week to process.
The retailer quietly restocked the Christmas must-have between 3am and 4am today sparking a frenzy among shoppers hoping to finally get their hands on one.
But scores of customers were left disappointed after they paid for the machine, which costs up to £450, and later received an email saying the order was cancelled.
Now the unlucky buyers will have to wait up to seven working days to receive their money back following the major Argos bungle.
Some shoppers have even claimed they’ve been charged up to three times for the product – leaving them waiting on almost £1,500 to be refunded just weeks before Christmas.
Argos have been inundated with complaints on their social media pages from raging customers, demanding their money back.
Dave Gilkes from Banbury, Oxfordshire wrote on Facebook: “Why did you take payment for my order when you knew you were out of stock.
"Then you cancelled the order without notice and now tell me I have to wait five working days to refund my payment."
He added: "This is terrible customer service."
Donna Beresford-Wylie said: “I’ve had three payments taken out this morning as I kept being told to try different payment methods. Absolutely FUMING.
“Why on earth would they take such a huge payment three times? Without even giving the item?
“I’m actually shocked. Been on the phone to Argos customer services and they don’t give a s***.
“Just said money will be returned eventually from anything up to 14 days!”
David Nash added: “Your site is an absolute shambles.
“Maybe just don’t retail PS5’s as you’re clearly not equipped to deal with them without harming countless customers!
“Seven day refunds – behave.”
Stacey Robinson said: “Looks like I am not the only [one] who has had money taken this morning for PS5 and order cancelled.
“Up to even days for refund? Absolutely ridiculous!
“It is showing out of stock now.
“Will there actually be any on sale today and does it go live at a certain time or will it be a chance of losing more and being disappointed?”
And Nicola Walters said: “You’ve just taken £450 out of my account for an item that is not in stock to send an automated message saying it will take seven days to refund.
“How is this acceptable. It is theft.”
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X – when did they launch and how much do they cost?
Microsoft launched the Xbox Series X and its smaller, cheaper sibling, the Series S, on November 10.
The release date covered the UK, US, Australia and a bunch of other countries worldwide.
The disc-free Series S costs £249/$299, while the Xbox Series X comes in at £449/$499.
So how does that compare to the new Xbox's biggest rival, the PlayStation 5?
The PS5 launch fell on November 12, but not everywhere.
That date only stood for the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.
UK gamers had to wait until November 19 to order one of the consoles.
The PS5 proper costs £449.99/$499.99, while the digital edition comes in at £359/$399.
Argos responded to one customer on social media saying the retailer won't be getting any more PS5s until next year.
Sony released two new consoles – the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – in the US on November 12 and in the UK a week later, on November 19.
Retailers including Amazon, Game and Smyths sold out of their stocks within hours of putting them on sale.
The new machine boasts 8K graphics and a powerful processor – making it one of this year's must-have presents for gamers.
In other news, fans of Call of Duty will now have the choice of playing a non-binary character in the game.
The Sun's favourite alternative to a games console is the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.
And, you can play PS5 games on iPhone, Android or PC.
