A comprehensive stock-buying election playbook: Here are the dozens of stocks to buy across 7 market sectors in each of the 3 most likely outcomes, according to Raymond James

  • Uncertainty still surrounds the outcome of the election and its implications for markets.
  • To cut through some of the uncertainty, Raymond James lays out which stocks will benefit in each of the three most likely scenarios.

A week from election day, the polls seem to indicate that the most likely outcome will be a Joe Biden win and a Democrat-controlled House and Senate — a blue sweep.

But those are the polls, and they can shift drastically in a matter of days and contain the oft-forgotten margin of error (see: 2016).

So while many on Wall Street are expecting a certain election result, there is still a healthy level of uncertainty around how things will actually play out next week.

To help investors position their portfolios once the results are known, Raymond James has released a list of stocks across seven market sectors that would be set to benefit in one of what they deem the three most likely scenarios: a Democratic sweep, a Biden win with a split Congress, or a Trump win with a split Congress.

Travis McCourt, an institutional equity strategist at Raymond James, said in the report that two of the three outcomes would be the most favorable to markets.

"The 'Best-Positioned' stock lists our analysts compiled tell an interesting story. The relative performance of the lists in aggregate was significantly positive for both the "Democratic Sweep" and "Status Quo" election outcomes," McCourt said.

He continued: "We believe this is because, in our opinion, the driving factor in the market has been investors' belief that: 1) The first fiscal stimulus was more supportive than expected 2) Under both a Democratic Sweep and a Status Quo election, we are likely to get material fiscal stimulus, though the timing and size may differ obviously, with a Democratic Sweep likely yielding more stimulus in early 2021, while a Status Quo election likely yields less stimulus, but sooner."

Broken down by sector, below are their expectations under each scenario and a handful of stocks they expect to benefit.
